Colouring-In fame!

I did it! I actually won my first colouring-in competition since I was about 8. Back then the prize was a box of pencils, or the monetary value of three dollars. I took the money, which I suspect Mum sourced from her own wallet rather than drive across town to the house of the Chronicle kids-page editor.

Anyway, I haven't picked up the prize for this one yet. Think it might be a Rango dvd. It was organised by the video store in my village (the sleepy Hamlet of Island Bay, in Wellington). in case you're thinking I trampled on the dreams of all the child entrants, I won for the 14-99 age category. So I only trampled on teenagers who should be out riding with the local bmx gangs anyway, and old people.

Wellywoodland

So our fair city may soon be christened Wellywood, thanks to the comic geniuses at the International Airport who plan to emblazon the monicker, Hollywood style, across the Miramar hills. There's plenty to say about it, and every Tommasina, Dick, and Hairy Jo Bloggs has already spewed their cerebral guts over the issue. So I did a painting, because really I don't care enough to write a letter or print out a sign and drive with it around the airport wasting petrol. There's been some great suggestions for other stuff to be erected in place of the Wellywood sign, but the best in my opinion is to cover those sad old hills with a forrest of hefty trees to inhale some of the airport's carbon dioxide burps.

Failing that, something more practical for the foreign hoards in their rentacars.

Flooded Engine

Last friday we flooded the engine of our mazda, leading to a series of other problems culminating in the car's death. However, we threw 700 bucks at it and miraculously it came back to life. Zombie car! Anyway, the whole kerfuffle coincided nicely with the timing and theme of Illustration Friday's topic, "Soaked". So here's my first ever Illustration Friday submission...

Today (9th May) is Roger Hargreaves' birthday. He wrote and illustrated many childrens books, most notably the 46 Mr Men and 33 Little Miss books. Starting with Mr Tickle, the characters were generally named for their defining habits (Little Miss Somersault, Mr. Sneeze), temperaments (Mr Happy, Miss Stubborn), and physical traits (Mr Tall, Little Miss Tiny), while others were named for their social status (Mr Nobody). Though the characters were set in their ways, the series celebrated individuality and diversity. Were Hargreaves to have lived long enough, he may eventually have tackled gender diversity too. He didn't, so I did it for him.

I'd just watched Tremors 2 Aftershocks, so decided to incorporate a sort of an alien/plant/tentacled Graboid-like dude in there. Click it for a better looksee. Zoo day

I recently became a Wellington Zoo Crew member. So I can now go to the zoo whenever I want for inspiration and some doodling. Any zoo visit for me tends to be a mix of wonder and sadness, but I can honestly say Wellington Zoo is the least saddening zoo I've been to. That includes you Toronto with your depressed looking Wallabies.

So hopefully i'll have a bunch of sketches of not-depressed looking zoo residents to post each couple of weeks. Here's the first. A very obliging giraffe, and a visiting bird. Just as I started to tutu a little too much with the details, he decided to get up and move out of sight. Good call Mr Giraffe.

I is for Eye Poo

I've started another blog. It's a doodle blog in which i'll be posting a new entry every week day. Each entry will include a page of doodling/painting/scribbling etc created during the first hour after I wake. Hence the name Eye Poo which is a colloquial term for eye boogers, which is also a colloquial term for eye candy, eye toast, eye cheese, eye crust, eye mucus, sleepy poose, sleepy winks, crusties, sand etc etc.

The correct term is dried Rheum. It's an amassment of discarded junk (dust, dirt, grease, spam etc) which the eye, or some little goblin guy/gal in the eye leaves on your lower lip for pick-up. There's aparently a japanese idiom that goes (and don't quote me on this)... Mekuso hanakuso o warau, which supposedly translates (like I said don't quote me, I just found it elsewhere) as something like "the nose bogeys laugh at the eye boogers." Similar to "the pot calling the kettle black", or "look unto others as you'd have them look unto you".

Started a spanky new sketch book just for paint. I'm rehashing some old illos and ideas, because I need to paint more. I've become overly dependant on Photoshoppie. Can't stop myself reaching for ctrl z though. 'Undo' is a mighty gift. This threesome is based on some protesters and enforcers I photographed at the G8 summit at Gleneagles, Scotland. The police were generally less grumpy than that.

While I was drawing it I had to reboot the pooter, which was taking forever. I turned on the telly and a Humphrey Boggart film was on. The one about him pretending to be a clergyman, can't remember the name. He always seemed to have wet lips.

Strawberries truly are an amazing fruit. And sexy.

I know a girl, an ex flatmate, who has a phobia of seeds. Before eating a strawberry, she removes all the tiny black seeds on the skin with a knife. Sometimes she squishes them through a sieve and devours them all mushed up. Nuts. I think she harbours an irrational belief that the seeds will grow in her belly and the resultant berries will burst through her guts.

Here's some charcoal messiness...
Irrelevant side note... 'Messiness', 'filthiness', and 'silliness' are not found in the Collins dictionary, yet they are valid for use in scrabble!
